Choosing The Right Replacement Desiccant- Alumina Balls and Its Importance

In the industrial process and air treatment industry, it is essential to choose the right desiccant material to be used that can efficiently adsorb moisture, gases, contamination, etc, from the surroundings and keep the air dry and clean. Thus choosing replacement desiccant-alumina balls can help provide a high efficiency material for many industrial processes and applications. Selecting the right dryer, such as Alumina Balls, can make all the difference in terms of drying speed, durability, and cost in various applications.

Understanding Alumina balls as replacement desiccant

Alumina balls are extremely porous aluminum oxide beads that have a very high surface area and are usually found in beaded form. Because of their broad temperature resistance, excellent adsorption capacity, and chemical resistance, they are widely used and applied in many different industrial applications. These properties make them suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including water treatment and purification of gas and vapor, as well as drying and dehydration processes and it also allows them to be used as a desiccant to remove moisture and pollutants from the atmosphere.

Why Choose replacement desiccant - Alumina balls?

High adsorption capacity: Alumina has a very high adsorption rate in adsorbent for Dehydrating Air, which means that it can hold more water vapor per unit weight than other dryers such as silica gel. This means that the desiccant bed with activated alumina desiccant beads needs to be replaced less often, which means less maintenance and less downtime. It also means that less desiccant is required to achieve the drying performance you want, which means less space and potentially less equipment costs which is beneficial when using alumina balls for your dryer application.

Selective adsorption capabilities:

The alumina desiccant material as air drying desiccant has selective adsorption properties that allow it to selectively adsorb certain compounds and elements and let the others pass through, making it ideal for many industrial processes. This means that it takes water vapor out of the air stream first and then allows other gases such as nitrogen and oxygen to pass through fairly easily and is especially useful in applications where it is important to maintain specific gas compositions.

Versatility and customizable size, shape, and strength

Alumina or activated alumina, adsorbent for Drying Air can be used as per the requirements of the application and process in the form of beads, balls, and spheres, which allows the use of alumina balls effectively according to the specific requirements of your air drying system and adsorbent for Dehydrating Air. Here the bead size affects the pressure drop and the surface area; the smaller beads have a larger surface area but cause a larger pressure drop inside the system, and the crush strength guarantees that the desiccant will be able to withstand the pressure inside the air dryer without cracking or dusting.

The effectiveness of choosing replacement desiccant- Alumina balls can be greatly affected by different variables such as its activation level, pore size, and chemical composition and properties, you need to make sure the alumina you pick is compatible with the equipment you already have and is particularly made for air drying applications.

Activated Alumina Helps in Effective Water Treatment

Activated Alumina – An Introduction

Activated Alumina is a widely used form of desiccant, mainly employed for the purification and treatment of water made available to businesses and households by municipal corporations. Activated Alumina has two main highlights- it is a very porous material and has a large surface area. This helps the Activated Alumina to absorb more moisture/impurities over a vast area. Along with its use as a popular desiccant, Activated Alumina is also widely used to remove impurities and harmful substances like fluoride, arsenic and selenium from the water being used by households. Activated Alumina is manufactured by dehydroxylating aluminium hydroxide till a highly porous material is obtained.

Role of Activated Alumina in Water Treatment

As mentioned earlier, one of the major uses of Activated Alumina is in the treatment of water being supplied to town and cities by their respective municipal corporations. Activated Alumina is mainly used to remove dangerous substances like fluoride, which is very harmful to the human body as it can cause fluorosis. When the water comes in contact with Activated Alumina, then the fluoride levels are seen to fall from 10.00 ppm to below 1.0 ppm. This is the correct level of fluoride recommended for water made available to households and businesses.

Another advantage of using Activated Alumina is that it covers a large surface area. So when more water molecules are in contact with the Activated Alumina, more impurities will be removed from the water. Other factors needed for efficient water treatment include more activated alumina balls in the filter, lower water temperature and lower pH levels (i.e. the water should be more acidic).

Regeneration of Activated Alumina

Another major advantage of using Activated Alumina is that it can easily be regenerated and thus proves to be quite cost-effective for municipal corporations around the world. Once the Activated Alumina has been used, it is regenerated with the help of a dilute caustic solution. This caustic solution removes all the absorbed fluoride and other impurities from the Activated Alumina filter and then it is all ready to be used once again. This regeneration quality saves a lot of time and money for municipal corporations as they can use the same Activated Alumina many times over.

Activated Alumina For Purifying Natural Gases & Liquids

Introduction

The basic component of Activated Alumina is aluminium hydroxide. The high-capacity desiccant is manufactured by dehydroxylating aluminium hydroxide. At the end of the dehydroxylating process, we get a hard and durable material, which can be converted into any shape of our choice. The most commonly used shapes is balls and activated alumina balls serve as desiccants for water treatment and purification of natural gases and liquids. Activated Alumina is also manufactured in the form of beads and different cylindrical shapes.

Salient Features of Activated Alumina

Activated Alumina has many features, which make it a highly in-demand moisture absorber. Some of these features are discussed below:

1)   Non-reactive to water: A major benefit of using Active Alumina is that it does not react while coming in contact with water. There are no physical changes like shrinking, swelling or disintegration when the Activated Alumina balls/beads are placed in water. The high-capacity desiccant also does not offer any reaction to water slugging.

2) Same-sized Activated Alumina beads: Another advantage of using Activated Alumina beads is that they are uniformly sized. This feature helps in keeping the pressure afloat and the complete use of the bed column section.

3) Lesser disintegration: Activated Alumina has lower disintegration/depreciation qualities, which produces lesser dust during depressurization/loading. This also reduces the chances of plugging the after-filter.

Use of Activated Alumina in Purifying Natural Gases and Liquids

Activated Alumina has two main uses- water treatment and purification and drying of natural gases and liquids. Today we will explain in detail about how Activated Alumina finds the use of petroleum and natural gas industries.

The Activated Alumina used for this purpose must have a surface area of 345-415 m2/g as this offers the highest water capacity. This Alumina is also used for thermal swing adsorption, oil filtration and drying of gases and liquids.

In the petroleum industry, the main use of Activated Alumina is for the drying of organic liquids like Liquid Petroleum Gas or LPG, aromatic solvents, steam cracked liquids, gasolines, cholera and fluorocarbons. It is also used as an air drying desiccant, which is removing any traces of moisture from the gases. Gases like catalytic reforming recycle gas, synthesis gas, methyl chloride are also purified using Activated Alumina.

Activated Alumina ball suppliers also provide the desiccant for the cleaning up of liquids. This consists of removal of metallic parts, BF3, TBC, HCI, HF and fluorinated hydrocarbons. Companies make use of Activated Alumina desiccant to gas dry air separation plants and gases like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Activated Alumina For Air Drying

Good maintenance and purity of products is the need of all manufacturing industries in today’s days. The best solution to this,is the use of Activated Alumina. It comes out as a best product in this time and zone with effective maintenance properties.Activated alumina is prepared by the dehydroxylation process using aluminium hydroxide as the chief material. It is basically a dessicant that has a high degree of porous material. The main role of these dessicants is to absorb the moisture, water vapor, humidity, odor etc.The dessicants are available in a variety of types which makes it possible for purifying, drying as well as cleaning the air in cost effective manner. It makes it more stronger and thereby reduces the chances of contamination.Activated alumina finds a wide range of applications including water purification and industrial air drying. The activated alumina balls are used for heated air drying and for van drying.

METHODS:

The molecular sieves with high content of sodium alumina silicate beads has a pressure dew at the point of -100 degree Fahrenheit whereas the silica gel can also be used as absorbent at a dew point of -40 degree Fahrenheit. Hence, the activate alumina balls will have the almost same dew point in the range of -40 to-100 degree Fahrenheit. They are available in different bead sizes such as 1mm to 8mm.They are efficient for some of the processes like heated, compressed, heatless and also for the refrigerated type of air drying activated alumina applications.

One more alternative process include the Molsiv adsorbent alumina balls as the Aluminium oxide compound is resistant towards thermal shock, abrasion, highly porous surface area and many others. The alumina balls have high water carrying capacity and will never sink when immersed in water. The balls do not swell, disintegrate and soften when in comes in contact with water. They retain their properties with rising temperature compared to silica gel.Activated alumina AD101 has the best high level of dehydration rate.

APPLICATIONS:

Activated alumina balls find a wide range of applications including fluoride water filter, tower packing, column internals, air drying and many more. Besides they are extremely useful in purification of liquids and gases, drying of gases like oxygen,hydrogen,nitrogen,carbon-dioxide and many more. They are also useful in natural gas productions for the compression plants,LPG,LNG etc.

The Importance of Gas Drying Activated Alumina

The presence of water vapour and other toxic gases is known to cause adverse effects and severe contamination in more ways than one. Some of the most common industries where this is more applicable are in industrial gas drying and air conditioning.

Activated alumina is one of the most preferred minerals for this purpose. Its properties of removing gas and moisture are well established. This is especially true in the case of gases that have been compressed and other gases that have a high relative humidity.

The Main Reasons for Choosing Activated Alumina for Drying Purposes

Activated Alumina Balls

One of the important reasons for the use of activated alumina is its low cost and its affinity to absorb gases and moisture or water vapour. The other factor is the fact that it does not interact with the substances that it comes in contact with. It remains unchanged in its chemical composition and can be reused multiple times by regenerating it to the required heat which can be between 200*C and 300*C. Importantly, the size of its pores is large and it has the potential of absorbing a large amount of gases and unwanted materials present in the atmosphere.

Sometimes, there are high gas pressures involved that need to be suitably dried. Activated alumina balls are known to withstand these pressures. Besides, it supports the need for regular regeneration and can be obtained in different combinations.

The Sources of Obtaining Activated Alumina

Aluminium is a mineral that is obtained from its raw physical ore form that is bauxite. When treated or chemically combined with soda, it gets converted into aluminates of sodium. After the process of washing and separation, some impurities are removed that may include iron oxide and silica.

The remaining residue is activated by a process of calcinations that can involve the induction of temperatures between the ranges of 400*C to 600*C.  It is the water evaporation and the resulting decomposition that finally produces the activated carbon.

Drying Compressed Air with Activated Alumina

Over the years, the commercial drying conditions have become more demanding with customers outlining the pressures, velocities and regeneration frequencies for their air service. To satisfy these needs, different formulations of activated alumina are used for removing the water from air and other gases. It is a prominent way to dry compressed air and gases with relatively high humidity. The major reasons for its widespread acceptance in various applications are physical and chemical resistance, low cost, and a high capacity to retain water and regenerability.

Activated Alumina F200

Being an excellent desiccant, it is basically a smooth sphere of alumina produced by a unique manufacturing process for drying a variety of gases and liquids. The molecules with high polarity are preferentially adsorbed on it, whereas many stream conditions like concentration, pressure and molecular weight of the molecules affect the adsorption efficiency. F-200 is rapidly becoming an ideal product for both small and large dryers in the following areas:
Acid removal: During the manufacturing of fluorinated or chlorinated hydrocarbons, various acids are removed using this compound, resulting in a product which is completely non-corrosive.

Hydrocarbon adsorption: The surface chemistry and pore size distributions of Air Drying Activated Alumina play an important role in the adsorption of any hydrocarbon.

Process steam purification: It is an excellent material for the removal of any polar compounds like alcohol and water. It also readily adsorbs heavy metal ions and TBC from hydrocarbons.

Drying: As removal of water is necessary for efficient storage, processing and transportation of fluids, F-200 can be readily used in these applications to dry almost all gases and liquids.

Advantages of F200

The following properties make it an ideal product for many industries:
Low abrasion: This property makes sure that there is less dusting during loading, transport and service life, which, in turn, minimizes the filter plugging and downstream valve, an issue quite common with dustier products.

High crush strength: A high crush strength of Activated Alumina F200 allows rapid loading of towers and their use as taller towers, which makes desiccant to be used more efficiently. This property also enables it to dehydrate any acid containing liquids and gases for a relatively longer operating life.

Uniform size of the ball: The uniform sphericity of  these balls prevents segregation of adsorbent during pneumatic loading, thereby minimizing the channelling and yielding more efficient use of the entire desiccant tower.
High adsorption capacity: The high surface area of this compound provides high H2O adsorption capacity.

Based on the above points, it is evident that this is the best all purpose desiccant for drying most of the gases with relatively high humidities and air.
